Am I overweight?

Did you know that over 60% of Australians are overweight or obese? That’s 60% of Australians who are risking their health and wellbeing. The National Health and Medical Research Council (NMRC) have called this an epidemic and have called on governments and individuals to do something about it.

How is obesity measured?

Obesity is measured by the body mass index (BMI). The BMI reflects a person’s weight in comparison to their height: 

(weight [kg] ÷ height2 [m2]) 3

How common is obesity?

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in Australia. Statistics prepared by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that: 61.4% of people aged 18 years or over are overweight (BMI 25.00-29.99) or obese (BMI 30+). Only 36.6% of Australians are considered of ‘normal’ weight (BMI 18.50-24.99) and 2% of people are actually underweight (BMI 18.5 and under). Many people don't think they are obese...

In a recent market research survey: 3% of the extremely obese (BMI 40+) thought their weight was acceptable. Only 62% of people with a BMI of 40+ accepted that they were obese.
